But there's a lot more to explore in LA than its star-studded heritage. Enjoy the 75 miles of coastline: Wander the famous canals of Venice Beach, or drive out to the more remote Malibu coast. Get your culture on at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, home to everything from ancient Islamic artifacts to contemporary American art. Or stretch your legs with a hike at Runyon Canyon Park — it offers great views of the surrounding hills and the iconic Hollywood sign.

Explore the Outer Beach Towns

Santa Monica, Venice, Malibu and Long Beach are four of Los Angeles' most popular beach destinations. Of the four, Malibu is the most remote and least urban — head here for surfing and stand-up paddleboarding. Depending on traffic, you can get to Long Beach in 40 minutes, while the others take around an hour.

Hit the Hills

LA isn't only about urban adventure — the locals love the outdoors, too. Hike the hills at Runyon Canyon Park, where they also offer free outdoor yoga classes. Or hit the Griffith Park trails: Here, you can hike to Bronson Canyon, the entrance of which appears as the mouth of the Batcave in the 1960s version of "Batman."

As international and unique as its residents, the cuisine in Los Angeles is an experience all of its own. Located off the coast of California, Catalina Island is a little paradise, perfect for a day of unwinding and exploring. Everything is within walking distance, so have fun with the family exploring the town of Avalon or grab your hiking shoes and hit the trails. If you're looking to relax by the seaside, head to Descanso Beach Club, which is considered the nicest beach on the island, or set sail on a catamaran to circle the island and take it all in.

William Wrigley Botanic Gardens Near Avalon Catalina Island

Walk Through the Wrigley Memorial

William Wrigley, Jr. was the one responsible for developing beautiful Catalina, so why not spend the afternoon paying tribute to him? Hike up about 30 minutes from the beach to the Botanical Gardens and Wrigley Memorial, where you can stroll through 37 acres of Californian plants and admire the 130-foot tower that was built to honor the man who brought life to the island.

There are no cars for tourists on this island! If you want to get around quickly, rent a golf cart.

Sit and Sip

It's your vacation, so grab your swimsuit and towel and find a spot on the soft sand at Descanso Beach. It's the only beach where you can legally drink on the island, so you can order your ice-cold treat of choice from the nearby beach club, then dig your toes in the sand as you soak up the view.

Shopping

Wander down the waterfront and explore the shops and boutiques. Pop into one of the many stores for fun souvenirs to take home for the whole family. If you're looking for something unique to the island, the Avalon General Store should top your list.

Art Deco Appreciation

"Casino" is derived from the Latin word for "gathering place" and that's exactly what Catalina Casino is. Opened in 1929, this Art Deco masterpiece is one of the most famous attractions on the island, but you won't find any gambling in here. Instead, take a tour back in time to explore the world's largest circular ballroom or catch a flick in the original movie theater.

Insider tip

A free shuttle runs from town to Descanso Beach every half-hour. However, you should check the schedule to make sure it's running on the day you're visiting.

Local Cuisine

From enjoying a three-course meal at Mt. Ada (William Wrigley Jr.'s old mansion with views of the harbor) to grabbing a burger and fries from one of the casual joints in Avalon, there are great dining options for everyone.
